Ric Elias: 3 things I learned while my plane crashed | Video on TED.com

Ric Elias: 3 things I learned while my plane crashed | Video on TED.com

This is the Tedtalk we looked at this morning! An interesting 5 minute talk.

YouTube - Joni Mitchell-California (The Johnny Cash Show)

YouTube - Joni Mitchell-California (The Johnny Cash Show): "Joni Mitchell-California"

here's the song we listened to... but there weren't a lot of us this morning....

Here are the lyrics:

Joni Mitchell
California

Sitting in a park in Paris, France
Reading the news and it sure looks bad
They won't give peace a chance
That was just a dream some of us had
Still a lot of lands to see
But I wouldn't want to stay here
Its too old and cold and settled in its ways here
Oh, but California
California I'm coming home
Im going to see the folks I dig
Ill even kiss a sunset peak
California Im coming home

I met a redneck on a grecian isle
Who did the goat dance very well
He gave me back my smile
But he kept my camera to sell
Oh the rogue, the red red rogue
He cooked good omelettes and stews
And I might have stayed on with him there
But my heart cried out for you, california
Oh california Im coming home
Oh make me feel good rockn roll band
Im your biggest fan
California, Im coming home

Chorus:

Oh it gets so lonely
When youre walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
Just gives you the blues
Just gives you the blues

So I bought me a ticket
I caught a plane to spain
Went to a party down a red dirt road
There were lots of pretty people there
Reading rolling stone, reading vogue
They said, how long can you hang around?
I said a week, maybe two,
Just until my skin turns brown
Then Im going home to california
California Im coming home
Oh will you take me as I am
Strung out on another man
California I'm coming home

Chorus:

Oh it gets so lonely
When you're walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
More about the war
And the bloody changes
Oh will you take me as l am?
Will you take me as l am?
Will you?

YouTube - DIONNE WARWICK-I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER

(This is the jazzier version....)

We also listened to: "Do you know the way to San Jose?"

I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER (Dionne Warwick)

The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup
I say a little prayer for you
While combing my hair, now
And wondering what dress to wear, now
I say a little prayer for you

Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever, forever, we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, together, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only be heartbreak for me

I run for the bus, dear
While riding I think of us, dear
I say a little prayer for you
At work, I just take time
And all through my coffee break-time
I say a little prayer for you

Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever, forever we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, together, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only be heartbreak for me

I say a little prayer for you (X2)

Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever, forever we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, together, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only be heartbreak for me

My darling, believe me
For me there is no one
But you ....

BBC News - Obama's State of the Union address

BBC News - Obama's State of the Union address: "Obama's State of the Union address"

Another view of America. Obama speaking to a republican congress.
My colleague, John Mellor, professor at the Ecole Centrale says the following about this speech:

"Good afternoon dear colleagues,

You will find above a link to a very well-crafted (and crafty) speech by President Obama.
It contains excellent ideas and ideals and will broaden the vocabulary of our students.

It makes a plaidoyer for education, scholarship, life-long learning, investment in science and technology and is a case study in the art of persuasive and effective public speaking. (using to good purpose humour, emphasis and intonation)

There is also a running commentary on the left-hand side pane next to the full transcript which is a very useful pedagogical tool. Access to specific sections of the speech is facilitated by the timeline.

Wishing you all the best in this dreary and wet weather.

Best regards,

John"
